Professor Tse-Kang Leng and Researcher Park Byung-Bae of the Institute of Political Science, Academia Sinica, Taiwan, Visit and Interview with the Russian Institute

Professor Tse-Kang Leng and Researcher Park Byung-Bae of the Institute of Political Science, Academia Sinica, Taiwan, visited the Russian Institute on July 17, 2024, and had an interview on the topic of Arctic governance. Professor Leng has been conducting a research project with research funds from the National Science and Technology Commission of Taiwan since 2020 on the topic of “Research on Northern Europe and Northern Diplomacy.” Professor Leng is particularly focusing on the Arctic countries and non-Arctic countries (Korea, China, and Japan), which are “middle powers,” such as Korea and Northern European countries. Professors Choi Woo-ik and Kim Sun-rae of the Russian Studies Institute discussed the major differences between the Arctic policies of the Moon Jae-in and Yoon Seok-yeol administrations, including the responses of the Nordic countries to the Russia-Ukraine war and the relationship between South Korea and Russia and between South Korea and Northern Europe due to recent political changes, South Korea’s strategy for participating in the Arctic Council and international systems related to the Arctic, and the role of large Korean corporations in Arctic economic cooperation, including Northern Sea Routes, LNG projects, and infrastructure development.
