2024 Korea-Russia Think Tank Network Construction Project… Moscow International Academic Conference and Seminar Held

The Russian Studies Institute (Director Pyo Sang-yong) held a joint international academic conference and seminar with Hanyang University’s Asia-Pacific Research Center and the Eurasian Policy Research Institute in Moscow from June 10 (Mon) to 13 (Thu) as part of the 2024 Korea-Russia Think Tank Network Construction Project.

On Monday, June 10, the first event was held at the Institute of World Economy and International Relations (IMEMO) under the Russian Academy of Sciences under the theme of “Changes in the International Order and the Geopolitical Situation in Northeast Asia: Views from Moscow and Seoul.” The participants analyzed the situation in Northeast Asia on topics such as the US Indo-Pacific strategy, China, and the Korean Peninsula, and discussed solutions for normalizing the cooled Russia-South Korea relationship. They analyzed the recently growing Russia-North Korea relationship and discussed ways for South Korea-Russia cooperation to respond to these changes.

The second event was held on Tuesday, the 11th, at the Moscow Institute of International Relations (MGIMO) to commemorate the 140th anniversary of the Korea-Russia Treaty of Amity and Commerce, with the theme of “Recent Northeast Asian Geopolitical Changes and Korea-Russia Relations.” At the MGIMO conference, experts from both countries provided diagnoses on the Northeast Asian situation due to changes in the international order, political issues between Korea and Russia, and economic cooperation.

Director Pyo Sang-yong of the Russian Studies Institute stated, “We will continue to maintain networks with the Moscow Institute of International Relations (MGIMO) and the Russian Academy of Sciences Institute of World Economy and International Relations (IMEMO) and hold academic conferences in the future,” emphasizing that the exchange of expert groups between the two countries will play an important role in maintaining South Korea-Russia relations and managing the situation in Northeast Asia, as Russia-North Korea relations are rapidly improving.”
