humanities lecture with Seocho-gu Banpo Library

The Russia Institute HK+ Project Group held a humanities lecture for citizens on the subject of “Russia, Reading through War and Literature” at the Seocho-gu Banpo Library Multipurpose Hall from November 8 (Tue) to December 27 (Tue), 2022. ran the program. This event was designed to objectively read today's Russia through the lives of Russians reflected in Russian literature in the past along with a correct understanding of the war in the context of the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine.


The first quarter of the total quarterfinals was conducted by Professor Hwang Seong-woo from the Russian Institute. Prof. Hwang Seong-woo, “Cry and Ordeal: Thousand Years of Russian History of National Suffering,” “First Encounter with Mongolia, and 240 Years of Yoke,” “Russia-Ukraine War/The Bad Ties Between Poland and Russia,” “The Fatherland War and Great Patriotic War” Patriotic War: 1812 vs. 1941”, etc., and explained how Russia, which has accumulated a thousand years of history, overcame the ordeal of numerous wars and developed its country through examples of representative wars. The last quarter was conducted by Dr. Shin Bong-joo of Seoul National University. Dr. Shin Bong-joo said, “Nikolai Gogol 'Taras Bulba': In Search of Ukrainian Kazakh National Myth,” “Lev Tolstoy, 'War and Peace': Rewriting the Fatherland War of 1812,” “Dostoyevsky, 'Evil Spirit': A Prelude to Revolution ,” “Vasily Grossman, 'Life and Destiny': The origins of totalitarianism,” intensively emphasized the characteristics of Russian society and culture as the prism of war reflected in Russian literature.


Even though it was held offline in the evening, the lecture was held amid enthusiastic responses from Seocho residents throughout the lecture, and it was an event that satisfied the curiosity of the attendees through many questions and answers throughout the lecture. Hankuk University of Foreign Studies Russian Studies Institute and Seocho-gu Banpo Library opened a lecture series through their first relationship last year, and agreed to hold an event with a new theme every semester.
