The Institute of Russian Studies at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies (Director: Pyo Sang-Yong) hosted a series of international conferences and seminars in Moscow from June 10 (Mon.) to June 13 (Thu.) as part of the 2024 Korea–Russia Think Tank Network Project. The events were organized jointly with Hanyang University’s Center for Asia-Pacific Studies and the Eurasia Policy Research Institute.
The first event, held on June 10 at the Institute of World Economy and International Relations (IMEMO) of the Russian Academy of Sciences, focused on the theme “Shifts in the International Order and the Geopolitical Landscape of Northeast Asia: Perspectives from Moscow and Seoul.” Participants analyzed regional dynamics related to the U.S. Indo-Pacific strategy, China’s role, and developments on the Korean Peninsula, and discussed potential pathways to normalize the cooled relations between Korea and Russia. The session also included assessments of the increasingly close ties between Russia and North Korea and explored corresponding cooperation strategies for Korea–Russia relations.
The second event, on June 11 at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO), commemorated the 140th anniversary of the Korea–Russia Treaty of Amity and Commerce. Under the theme “Recent Geopolitical Changes in Northeast Asia and Korea–Russia Relations,” experts from both countries examined shifts in the international order, the evolving geopolitical situation in Northeast Asia, and key political and economic issues affecting bilateral relations.
Director Pyo Sang-Yong emphasized the institute’s commitment to sustaining and expanding its academic network with institutions such as MGIMO and IMEMO, noting that continued exchanges among experts from both countries will play a crucial role in maintaining Korea–Russia relations and managing the situation in Northeast Asia, particularly as Russia–North Korea relations grow increasingly close.
