The Institute of Russian Studies (Director Sangyong Pyo) co-hosted the 12th East Asian Slavic Eurasian International Conference (EACSES) on the theme of “Re-building Peace in Eurasia beyond Conflicts: Humanistic and Socio-Cultural Reinterpretations” at the International Hall of Hanyang University’s Seoul Campus on June 28-29.
Starting with a welcoming speech by Professor Emeritus Kang Deok-soo of Hankuk University of Foreign Studies (former president of the Korean Society of Slavic Eurasian Studies), the two-day academic conference featured 108 presentations from 16 countries in 36 sessions, including Korea, Japan, China, Mongolia, India, Central Asian countries, and Russia. This conference was attended by Slavic studies experts from the entire Eurasian region, including Russia, on a variety of topics, including politics, economy, society, culture, and art. This 12th International Conference on East Asian Slavic Eurasian Studies was the first in-person conference since COVID-19, and the largest number of scholars ever participated in the conference due to high interest in recent Eurasian issues, such as the war in Ukraine. In addition, at this East Asian academic conference, President Andrii Krawchuk and other board members of ICCEES (International Conference of Central and Eastern European Studies) representing Canada, Australia, the UK, Japan, and Finland participated in person and held a hybrid board meeting, and through a roundtable to diagnose the current state of Russian studies around the world after the Ukrainian War, they exchanged opinions on the state of Russian regional studies in East Asia as well as in the Americas and Europe.
