Despite the challenging circumstances surrounding Korea–Russia relations, the Institute of Russian Studies at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies (Director: Professor Choi Woo-Ik) held a series of international academic conferences and special lectures in Moscow in collaboration with Hanyang University’s Center for Asia-Pacific Studies and the Eurasia Policy Research Institute. The events took place from September 22 to 24, 2025, across multiple venues in Moscow.
The first conference, held on September 22 at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO), was organized under the theme “The Reorganization of the International Order and the Situation on the Korean Peninsula after Trump’s Return to Power.” Scholars from Korea and Russia exchanged analyses on the shifting international order in the Trump 2.0 era, focusing on developments in Northeast Asia, the Russia–North Korea relationship, and Korea–Russia relations.
The second session, held on September 23 at the Institute of China and Contemporary Asia (ICCA) of the Russian Academy of Sciences, centered on “Assessing and Forecasting Korea–Russia and North Korea–Russia Relations in the Trump 2.0 Era.” Discussions explored issues such as the Russia–North Korea alliance, trilateral cooperation among North Korea, China, and Russia, and potential pathways toward normalizing Korea–Russia relations.
The third event, on September 24, took place at the Korean Cultural Center in Moscow’s Old Arbat district, featuring public lectures for Russian audiences. The lectures included:
Professor Um Gu-Ho (Hanyang University), “35 Years of Korea–Russia Diplomatic Relations”;
Professor Kim Yoo-Jung (HUFS), “Korea–Russia Economic Cooperation”;
Professor Kim Sun-Rae (HUFS), “K-Pop Demon Hunters.”
Director Choi Woo-Ik emphasized that the institute plans to continue strengthening its academic network with MGIMO, ICCA, and other Russian universities, noting that regular scholarly exchanges will play a crucial role in maintaining Korea–Russia relations amid the rapidly changing international environment — including the Ukraine war and North Korea’s involvement in the conflict.
